One of the things I love most about being around my family is the informality of our get-togethers. For most families, birthdays and holidays are special, formal affairs. Not for the Doans. The bigger the occasion, the more less formal we are. Over the years, we've just stopped doing things because we thought that's what families do. Instead, we do what works for us and are 100x happier. For my sister Joan's 30th birthday, we didn't go out for dinner. We ordered pizza from Patxi's and ate in our pajamas. Then we ate cake. It was simple and perfect.
